Our neighbors have stories to tell, and for several of us living in Arkansas, we have direct connections to these stories, whether we were born, grew up or have childhood memories of our neighboring states. This August, Arkansas TV takes viewers north and south to explore the history, culture and traditions of Missouri and Louisiana through three compelling programs. First up is “LA64,” a travel series that explores all 64 of Louisiana’s parishes, uncovering the people, places and traditions that make each community unique. Then, “Crossroads of a Nation” examines Missouri’s pivotal role in American history and how the state helped shape the nation. Finally, “City of a Million Dreams: History of Jazz” explores the rich traditions of New Orleans and the enduring cultural legacy of jazz.
"LA64” – airs Sundays at 2:30 and 3 p.m., starting Aug. 2.
“LA64” is a new original Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB) travel series that explores all 64 parishes of Louisiana, revealing stories that make each one unique. Hosted by Louisiana native Karen LeBlanc, the series takes viewers beyond the familiar, uncovering hidden gems, local traditions, remarkable architecture and the cultural threads that connect every corner of the state.
From small towns to vibrant cities, bayous to back roads, “LA64” captures Louisiana as it is lived through its food, music, history, and communities. Each episode offers an intimate, cinematic portrait of a single parish, celebrating both its individuality and its role in the larger Louisiana story.
“Crossroads of a Nation” – airs Mondays at 9 p.m., starting Aug. 10.
Detailing the history of Missouri as a crossroads of the nation, this three-part documentary traces the state’s role in U.S. history as the nation expanded westward across the continent. From the region’s indigenous cultures up to the brink of the Civil War, this film will trace Missouri’s indelible and undeniable mark on American history, which helped shape the nation into what it is today.
“City of a Million Dreams: History of Jazz” – airs Tuesday, Aug. 18.
Jazz funerals are among the most recognized yet least understood traditions of New Orleans. This documentary explores their cultural significance through the lens of parading culture and the story of clarinetist Michael White. After Hurricane Katrina destroys his home and archives, White struggles to rebuild, reflecting the resilience and renewal at the heart of the tradition and the city.
